Police and protesters clash in Nairobi after opposition Raila Odinga's call for mobilization

March 20 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The security forces have dispersed this Monday with tear gas and even live ammunition a protest called in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, by the opposition leader Raila Odinga and that the Kenyan authorities had declared illegal this weekend.

Police notices have not prevented numerous people from concentrating in different parts of the capital. One of the points of greatest tension has been in the vicinity of the Kenyatta International Conventional Centre, a tower that a group of protesters has tried to access.

The security forces have launched tear gas to contain these mobilizations, although the tension has been increasing and shots have been fired. At least one person has been wounded by a bullet, according to sources quoted by the Kenyan newspaper ‘The Standard’.

Odinga had promised “the mother of all protests” to continue the fight against the government after the 2022 elections, which he considers fraudulent. In these elections, his great political rival, the current president of the country, William Ruto, prevailed.

The Police had declared this Monday’s march illegal because its organizers had not communicated the exact route it was to take – a version that the opposition denies – and has activated a strong deployment that was visible this Monday in some of the main institutions of the African country.
