() — The Philippines has ruled there is no basis to ban the movie “Barbie” for including a map that allegedly shows the “nine-dash line,” which marks China’s territorial claims in the South China Sea, the Map Review and Classification Board said. Films and Television (MTRCB) of the Philippines in a statement on Wednesday.
“The contentious scene does not represent the ‘nine dash line.’ Instead, the map depicted the route of Barbie’s fictional journey from Barbie Land to the ‘real world’, as an integral part of the story,” said MTRCB.
Senator Francis Tolentino last week asked the MTRCB to ban the movie “Barbie” because of a scene featuring a map that allegedly showed the “nine dash line.”
“If the invalidated 9-hyphen line was performed in the movie ‘Barbie,’ then it is incumbent on the MTRCB to ban it as it denigrates Philippine sovereignty,” it said in the statement.
Vietnam last week banned the movie “Barbie” for the same reason, according to local outlet Voice of Vietnam.
