Peru responds to Mexico and will impose visas on its citizens

Previously, the Government of Mexico announced that it will request a temporary visa from Peruvian citizens starting April 20.

The Peruvian Foreign Ministry has indicated that the measure is applied in accordance with the principle of reciprocity.

This Friday, the Mexican Ministry of the Interior communicated that the country's authorities will request a temporary visa from Peruvian citizens due to the increase in nationals of that country who entered with the intention of carrying out activities not permitted due to their immigration status. According to the statement, the regulations will come into force from April 20.

The Mexican authorities detailed that, in the immigration filters, they have identified people whose profile does not fit that of the genuine visitor or tourist “and present inconsistencies in their documentation or information, strengthening the possibility that a significant number of people intend to use the deletion of visa improperly”.

The statement from the Peruvian Foreign Ministry explains that, like Mexico, “Peru will make some exceptions that will be specified in a next Supreme Decree.” In this regard, they reported “that a visa will not be required for Mexican citizens who have a Schengen visa, from the United Kingdom, Canada, the United States, Australia and Japan, nor those who have permanent residence in the countries concerned and in the members of the Pacific Alliance”.
