Opposition leader Nelson Chamisa warns of possible violence during the upcoming election campaign in Zimbabwe

22 Jan. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The leader of Zimbabwe’s main opposition party, Nelson Chamisa, has warned of the possibility of an outbreak of violence orchestrated by the government party, ZANU-PF, in the elections scheduled for later this year.

The president of the Citizens’ Coalition for Change (CCC), has asked the Western community to take a good look at the crisis that the country is going through and to “offer solidarity” to the opposition in the face of any assault ordered by the current president, Emmerson Mnangagwa , nicknamed ‘The Crocodile’.

“The leopard does not change its spots like the crocodile does not change its tactics. Violence is a real possibility and we see the dark clouds approaching,” he warned in an interview with the British weekly ‘Observer’.

A few months before the presidential elections in Zimbabwe, several arrests have taken place in recent weeks among politicians in opposition to President Mnangagwa, who is also running for a second term.

The riot police entered the home of the CCC deputy, Costa Machingauta, in the capital of Harare this Saturday. During the intervention they also arrested another deputy, Amos Chibaya, who would be at that moment holding a party meeting, as reported by Radio France Internationale (RFI).

The Police have justified the operation alleging that said meeting had not been authorized, while the opposition party has accused the Government of using the Police against political adversaries, as the aforementioned medium has revealed.
