One person dies in an attack on the Azerbaijani Embassy in Iran

At least one person has been killed and two others have been injured in an attack carried out this Friday by a gunman against a checkpoint at the Embassy of Azerbaijan in the Iranian capital, Tehran, authorities have confirmed.

The Azeri Foreign Ministry has indicated in a statement published on its website that the incident took place around 8:00 a.m. (local time) and has added that “the attacker reached the checkpoint with an assault rifle type Kalashnikov and killed the head of the security service”.

“Two Embassy security guards have been injured while trying to prevent the attack. An investigation is underway into this treacherous attack. Additional information will be released to the public on the details of the case,” he said. “May God have mercy on our martyr,” he has settled.

For his part, the commander of the Greater Tehran Police, Sardar Hosein Rahimi, has indicated that the suspect has been arrested and has specified that he entered the Embassy with a firearm and fired several shots inside the facilities, as and as the Iranian news agency Mehr has collected.

“Thanks to the speed of the Police, the attacker was immediately arrested. The investigation continues,” he stressed, although he has revealed that the detainee, who entered the Embassy with his two children, has confessed in the context of the investigations that the motive was “personal” due to “family problems”.
