MADRID Jan. 14 (EUROPA PRESS) –
North Korea launched several ballistic missiles into the Sea of Japan on Tuesday, as reported by the South Korean authorities, amid the continuous escalation of tensions that the Korean peninsula has been experiencing for months and less than a week before the president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, takes office again.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) of South Korea has indicated that the launches were recorded around 9:30 a.m. (local time, 1:30 a.m. Spanish peninsular time) from the city of Kanggye, capital of the northern province of Chagang, according to information collected by Yonhap news agency.
“In preparation for the additional launches, our military has strengthened surveillance while closely sharing information about the North Korean missile with the US and Japanese sides, and maintaining a posture of full readiness,” the JCS added.
Last week, coinciding with the trip of the head of US diplomacy, Antony Blinken, to Seoul, Pyongyang launched the first ballistic missile of the year, an intermediate-range hypersonic missile that flew over about 1,500 kilometers before “landing precisely in waters of a simulated target in open sea”.
Relations between the two Koreas are at their lowest point in years due to increased ballistic tests by Pyongyang, which violate sanctions imposed by the United Nations, and closer military cooperation between South Korea and the United States. .
