New to Midjourney is an awesome zoom effect. One that zooms out to generate spectacular images

Almost a year ago DALL-E surprised us all with his ability to ‘outpainting‘, which allowed you to generate an image that “extended” what the original image displayed. Suddenly we would see, for example, the room in which ‘The Girl with a Pearl Earring’, by Johannes Vermeer, was found, and the same thing happened with all kinds of works and photographs. Now that concept has gone further with MidJourney 5.2.

zoom out. These days David Holz, creator of Midjourney, announced the appearance of a new version of this image-generative AI model. There were several changes in it, but the one that is surprising users the most is the “zoom out” option that allows you to simulate that you have a kind of camera with which you can zoom out from the original image so that it suddenly disappears. show what we did not see.

spectacular results. There are many users who are already experimenting with this feature that allows you to reframe the image and create really striking new works. They make it look like we have a camera with a spectacular zoom that we are zooming out to imagine that that original photo was part of a much larger scene.

Beyond generative fill. The option is also reminiscent of Adobe Photoshop and its ‘Generative Fill’ tool with which it is possible to add all kinds of extra content to an image, but here the process is automatic and always tries to maintain the same context and focus.

This is an example we have generated from an original request for a portrait of Bill Gates. Once generated, we use the 2x zoom out option for the following images.

Options. At the moment the option only works with images generated with Midjourney: we will not be able to apply this effect to already existing images. Even so, it is possible to generate any image to later zoom out with the predefined buttons that allow you to generate a 1.5x zoom out or a 2x zoom out. It is also possible to access the “Make Square” option which generates material around the current image creating a 1:1 square format image.

Thats not all. In addition to this tool, in Midjourney 5.2 the aesthetic system has been improved, which promises better image quality, and a “–stylize” command with which it is possible to create even more striking non-realistic images. Another notable improvement is in the new “high variance mode”, which allows us to create a variant from a generated image that is much more different from the original: in the previous variance tools the changes were more subtle.

For paid subscribers only. The new version is available on the server Midjourney on Discord, where in fact it is already working by default. We will have to pay the subscription to the service to enjoy these benefits, and according to Ars Technica it is expected that the platform will have its own web platform sooner rather than later to leave behind its current dependence on Discord.
