Nepal releases serial killer Charles Sobhraj for deportation to France

Dec. 23 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Justice of Nepal has released this Friday the serial killer Charles Sobhraj, known as ‘The Serpent’, after the Supreme Court ruled his release to be deported to France within a period of fifteen days.

Sobhraj, who came to admit the commission of at least twelve homicides, has now been made available to the immigration authorities of the Asian country. The court decided to proceed with his release for medical reasons given, furthermore, that he has served 95 percent of his sentence.

The confessed killer, who was nicknamed ‘The Serpent’ for his ability to impersonate his victims and thus evade justice, has spent two decades in prison after being found guilty of robbing and murdering Western tourists in the 1970s in the Hippie trail to and from South Asia.

Sobhraj, 78, suffers from heart disease and needs open-heart surgery, according to the court. His lawyers had repeatedly requested the intervention of the court and had filed various writs of ‘habeas corpus’ asking for clemency. They had also asked for a presidential pardon.

He was arrested on September 19, 2003 and his sentence was scheduled to end on September 18, 2023. The man, also called the ‘bikini killer’, has French nationality but was born in Vietnam.
