Nearly 20 people die after boat sinks in northern Cameroon

Around 20 people have died in a shipwreck in the waters of Lake Chad in the town of Darak, located in northern Cameroon, according to authorities, who added that the boat was carrying passengers who were going to a market in the area.

According to information collected by the Cameroon Tribune news portal, the event took place on Thursday when the boat capsized due to the force of the waters, without at the moment there are details on the number of people who were on board.

In this sense, the sub-prefect of Darak, Mamat Zarma, has said that the authorities cannot yet give a balance of deaths and has warned that the number could increase in the coming hours. Search and rescue operations remain active in the area.
