Nearly 150 people killed in landslide in southern Ethiopia

Jul 23. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Around 150 people have died following a landslide on Monday in the Ethiopian town of Geze Gofa, located in the Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples’ Region (South), authorities in the African country confirmed on Tuesday.

Habtamu Fetena, spokesman for the Gofa area authorities, said 146 bodies had been found at the site so far, adding that an as yet unspecified number of children were among them.

He also stressed that search and rescue efforts are still ongoing in the area, and warned that the death toll could rise in the coming hours, according to the Ethiopian television channel Fana.

The landslide was apparently caused by the rains that fell in the area. Ethiopia is currently in the rainy season, which starts in July and usually lasts until mid-September.
