Naturgy, through its electricity distributor UFD, has begun the implementation of a solution -called ‘Fire Detection’- that uses the analysis of images and data in real time to anticipate a fire and notify the Emergency services, reported the company.
Specifically, the energy company will install in a first phase 20 devices that will cover an area of approximately 430 square kilometers in the Gerês-Xurés Transborder Biosphere Reserve, in
the province of Ourense (Galicia), a natural area of high ecological value. In a second phase, the installation of these devices will be extended to other geographical areas.
‘Fire Detection’ is a system based on the Onesait Phygital Edge platform from Minsait, an Indra company, and Intel capable of detecting possible fires in large areas of vegetation in advance and with total reliability, even in areas that are difficult to access, thanks to 360 degree surveillance.
Thus, through Artificial Intelligence algorithms, this tool analyzes and extracts information in real time from the images obtained in the cameras located in the high and medium voltage towers and identifies signs of fire and smoke within a range of two kilometers.
Once these signals have been detected, the system transmits alerts to a control center to activate the alert protocols for the emergency and extinction services. In addition, the system incorporates IoT (Internet of Things) sensors that help reduce ‘false positives’ and optimize stored energy resources.
The system was awarded at the enerTIC Awards 2021 for its innovative nature in the search for solutions to protect the environment through digitization and energy efficiency.
