MSI blocks overclocking and power surges on its motherboards with AMD Ryzen 7000X3D CPUs to prevent damage

After detecting that some AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D could be damaged and even damage motherboards by exceeding the safe voltages of the processor, in some cases by manual overclocks or by applying incorrect AMD Expo profiles, several companies have updated the BIOSes of their boards to avoid the problem. One of them was ASUS and another It has been MSI, which has limited the possibility of manually increasing the voltage on its motherboards as long as they are accompanied by AMD Ryzen 7000X3D series processors.

This limitation comes through new UEFI BIOS for motherboards compatible with these processors. Actually, this restriction was already notified by AMD, which has always announced that processors with X3D memories, but some MSI BIOSes allowed certain performance enhancement options that could increase the voltage.

Through a comment on reddit, MSI has clarified that this new BIOS adds various restrictions both at the UEFi BIOS panel level and from its MSI Center software.

In practice, this means that users of MSi boards with Ryzen 7000X3D processors will only be able to use the offset bar to regulate negative voltage values with respect to the reference voltage. Therefore, neither the voltage nor the frequencies can be raised from these utilities.

MSI statement translated:

Recently, there have been reports of damage to 7000X3D series CPUs, which may be caused by abnormal voltage issues. It is important to note that the 7000X3D series CPUs do not support manual voltage and frequency adjustments, but only support PBO (Precision Boost Overdrive) overclocking. To prevent overvoltage and reduce the risk of damage to 7000X3D series CPUs, MSI has added some restrictions in both AM5 series BIOS and MSI Center.

The BIOS now only supports negative offset voltage settings, which can only lower the CPU voltage. MSI Center also restricts any forward voltage and frequency settings, ensuring that the CPU is not damaged due to power surges.

For those looking to improve the performance of their 7000X3D CPUs, an option called Enhanced Mode Boost is offered in the BIOS. This option optimizes the PBO setting, allowing the 7000X3D series CPUs to achieve better performance without any manual voltage adjustment.
