More than 30 Libyan parties call for dialogue and citizen participation to end the political deadlock

Jul 25. (EUROPA PRESS) –

More than 30 political parties in Libya signed a joint declaration on Wednesday calling for dialogue and citizen participation in order to unblock the political situation in the country resulting from the lack of consensus on holding elections that would end the institutional crisis.

The parties have called for the creation of a roadmap based on provisional agreements and its subsequent approval by means of a referendum to guarantee the implementation of the commitments, according to The Libyan Observer.

In this regard, they stressed that the political future of the country should not be reduced to the House of Representatives and the High Council of State, two bodies that they consider “illegitimate” and that have contributed to the “political paralysis” of the country for “many years.”

This is why they have pointed out the need to form a new government through cooperation and “serious and responsible” dialogue that will allow it to extend its authority throughout the territory with the aim of avoiding “further suffering” for the population.

The aim of this new government would also be to create the necessary conditions for holding a referendum and “free, fair and transparent” elections through an initiative on which these parties have been working for a couple of years together with unions, civil society associations and various political and social figures.

The parties have insisted that a “national charter for peaceful coexistence” should be drafted, which would include measures to encourage trust between the country’s different political actors.

Libya is currently divided into two administrations after the House of Representatives terminated the mandate of Abdul Hamid Dbeibé by postponing the presidential elections in December 2021 and appointed Fazi Bashaga, recently suspended from office and replaced by the current Minister of Finance, Osama Hamad, to office.
