The authorities of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) reported this Thursday that at least 23 people have died due to the sinking of a boat with dozens of people on board in Lake Kivu, located in the east of the country, on the border with Rwanda.
However, sources collected by the German agency DPA suggest that almost 130 people could have died in the event. In addition, they warn that the death toll could increase since it is estimated that up to 700 people could be on board the boat.
The authorities of the province of North Kivu have reported in a statement published on their social networks that another 58 people have been rescued after the sinking of the boat, which occurred about 700 meters from the Kituku port, in the city of Goma. .
“The causes of the accident must still be determined by an ‘ad hoc’ investigation team to establish responsibilities,” added the provincial government of North Kivu, which has conveyed its condolences to the families of the deceased and the injured.
