Modi Inaugurates New Indian Parliament Building Amid Opposition Boycott

May 28. (EUROPE PRESS) –

The Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, has inaugurated this Sunday the new Parliament building in New Delhi amid the boycott by the opposition parties, who accuse the ‘premier’ of hoarding power and leaving aside the country’s president, Draupadi mumbled.

“The new Parliament is a springboard towards the democratic path. It is also an example of the aspiration and pride of our nation,” Modi said after a ceremony that included Vedic rituals and lasted for an hour.

Previously, Modi has received the traditional golden scepter, known as ‘Sengol’, highly symbolic as it was held by former Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru during a ceremony held on the eve of India’s independence.

“It is a source of immense happiness that a new Parliament has been built in less than two and a half years under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi,” said, for his part, the vice president of the Indian Upper House, Harivansh Narayan Singh, during the act, according to the newspaper ‘The Hindustan Times’.

The inauguration of the building has been controversial, as several Indian opposition parties have boycotted it, accusing the prime minister of leaving out the country’s president, Draupadi Murmu, who has not been invited to the event.

The opposition formations, a total of 19, already affirmed during the week that Modi’s actions “insult the Presidency” and “violate the spirit of the Constitution.” “Undemocratic acts are not new to the prime minister, who has ruthlessly emptied Parliament,” they added.
