Microsoft blocks emulators in Xbox Series X/S retail mode

10 Apr. (Portaltic/EP) –

Microsoft has blocked the emulators on their Xbox Series X/S game consoles, which means that it is not possible to run these types of programs on their computers if they do not have developer mode, the only one that seems to support them.

Microsoft’s new generation video consoles arrived in 2020 with the possibility of installing emulators, which opened the door to the use of old console games like PlayStation 2 and GameCube.

However, since last Thursday, numerous users and developers have reported that this possibility is no longer available in commercial mode (‘retail’) of game consoles, while still active in developer mode, which requires a payment to access it.

One of those affected is RetroArch, a studio that creates emulator ‘software’ for different gaming equipment, such as game consoles and computers. His program could be found in the Microsoft store, although since April 6 it only shows a message: “Unable to launch this game or app. The game or app you’re trying to launch violates Microsoft Store policies and is not supported“.

“Over the past two years, we’ve been promoting legal emulation on a popular platform that people have really enjoyed,” Twitter user said. gamr13who according to Kotaku has helped distribute the commercial version of RetroArch ‘software’.

Microsoft has previously withdrawn other emulation programs as it became known to them, as they they actually clash with your digital store policies.

“We continually evolve our mechanisms for reviewing and taking compliance action on content distributed to the Store to ensure alignment with our Microsoft Store Policies. As of 10.13.10, products that emulate a game system or platform game are not allowed on any device family“He explained in a statement to Kotaku, collected by Europa Press.
