Almost a decade later, Michael Che He’s still a little heated from a joke. Colin Jost wrote about salsa.
About 10 minutes into the episode, Carvey asked if Che or Jost had ever done or said anything during “Weekend Update” that caused the other to say after it aired, “If you ever do that again, I’m going to kick your butt.” [your] ass.”
Che had an instinctive reaction and immediately remembered his least favorite Jost joke.
“Yeah, I think ‘jalapeño issue,’ I got pretty mad about that,” Che said of a pun Jost made that was a play on the phrase “it’s all your business.”
“You were just annoyed that it worked so well,” Jost said, defending his joke.
“I remember you doing it in rehearsal because I had never heard it before,” Che recalled of the joke. “I don’t remember what the beginning was, but the punchline was ‘the jalapeño business.’ And I thought, ‘If you tell that joke on air, I’m leaving. I’m leaving the show.’”
“And he did it in the open air and destroyed it,” Che admitted.
Jost said he didn’t even like the joke very much, but Che’s hatred of him made him want to tell it live.
“Honestly, I would have left it if it didn’t bother you so much,” Jost told his co-host. “And then I was like, ‘I’m definitely, definitely going to do this.’”
Neither Jost nor Che remembered the reason for the joke, but in case you’re curious, according to multiple DeparturesIt was this:
“Ohio police arrested a woman who allegedly stabbed her boyfriend for eating all the salsa,” Jost said. “Although you’d be mad too if your boyfriend was a fan of jalapeños.”
Even though Jost made the joke in 2015, Che didn’t leave the show. We’re not sure why, but we’d like to think it’s because, despite a bad salsa joke, Che still values his friendship with Jost.
