But the IFT has decided to counteract this situation through regulatory measures. One of them is the sharing of network capacity, which is why Megacable has sent its reference proposal to the Institute so that its competitors such as Totalplay, Izzi and Telmex, and even local cable companies can access its fiber optic network so that they can create new triple play plans (internet, telephone and pay TV) in nine cities in five states of the Republic.
The reference offer allows companies to know what type of network and capacity certain operators have with some regulatory measure and thus determine if it is convenient to use it to improve their telecommunications services.
Two years ago, the IFT determined Megacable with substantial power in fixed services in San Mateo Atenco and Zinacantepec in the State of Mexico; León in Guanajuato; Guadalajara and Tonalá in Jalisco; Cuautlancingo and San Pedro Cholula in Puebla, as well as in Corregidora and El Marqués in Querétaro.
The regulator has decided to submit Megacable’s reference offer to public consultation, which will be available until November 26. And for the regulator, the opinions of the members of the industry are necessary, since “they are the ones who intervene in the operation of public telecommunications networks, and could demand regulated wholesale services from the Economic Agent with Substantial Market Power for the provision and marketing of their services.”
Since the pandemic, Megacable has intensified its commitment to increasing its fiber optic network to reach more places in the country with the aim of increasing its user base. Company data highlights that as of the third quarter of this year, its network has 100,166 kilometers and 16.9 million homes covered by this network, being one of the largest and most extensive in the country.
