Former Russian president and current vice president of the country’s Security Council, Dimitri Medvedev, has called for the end of the grain deal in its current form.
“The dependence on our country’s agricultural and food products has been recognized everywhere, hence the endless confusions on the issue of the grain agreement. Although it is already clear to everyone that in its current form it is not necessary and must be ended” , Medvedev has published in the newspaper ‘Rossiyskaya Gazeta’.
The governments of Russia and Ukraine, with the mediation of Turkey and the United Nations, reached an agreement in June 2022 for the transport of this type of merchandise, one of the few agreements reached by the parties involved in the conflict since the outbreak of the war, in February of that year.
Russia accepted a new extension of the agreement in mid-May but only for a period of 60 days, and warned that it would not extend it again if some of its demands were not met, among which is only the situation of the Togliatti- Odessa, the world’s largest for the export of ammonia.
Moscow has also warned that the pact benefits Ukraine more, since Russian products are not being transported; according to data from the Russian authorities, only three percent of the grain shipments that have sailed from Ukrainian ports since July 2022 have finally ended up in those “poorest” countries.
For their part, from kyiv they seem not to be in favor of expanding it once again, even going so far as to propose their own plans to export their agricultural products independently to countries in need.
