Mauritanian President meets AU after taking office for second term

Aug. 2 (EUROPA PRESS) –

Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Ghazuani met Friday with the President of the African Union (AU) Commission, Moussa Faki, after taking office the day before for a second term after winning the presidential elections with 56.12 percent of the votes.

Faki congratulated the Mauritanian president for winning the elections and expressed admiration for the climate of democracy and openness that the country enjoyed during his first term, according to the AMI news agency.

The meeting comes after Ghazuani pledged during his inauguration to fight corruption and carry out reforms to improve the country, focusing on, among other issues, the justice system.

Mauritania held presidential elections on June 29, in which a total of six candidates – including activist Biram Dah Abeid, who denounced fraud in 2019 after coming second – tried to defeat Uld Ghazuani, whose party won by a wide margin in the parliamentary elections held in 2023, when it won an absolute majority in the legislative body.

Opposition candidate Dah Abeid, who won 22 percent of the vote, denounced electoral fraud and called on his supporters to demonstrate. During the protests, authorities restricted access to the Internet via mobile phones.

Mauritania’s Interior Ministry said three people have died in violent riots following the announcement of election results in Mauritania, a mostly desert country with nearly five million people, making it one of the lowest-populated countries in the world.
