Mali's military junta is "open to dialogue" about the 49 Ivorian soldiers detained in Bamako

July 19 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The leader of the Malian military junta, Assimi Goita, declared on Monday that he is “open to dialogue” to resolve the issue of the 49 Ivorian soldiers detained at Bamako airport earlier this month.

Colonel Assimi Goita has been willing to work to resolve the conflict with the Ivory Coast and seek “a happy way out of this situation, including through diplomatic channels, with strict respect for Mali’s sovereignty,” according to a statement.

The Malian junta has requested the mediation of Togo and this African country has accepted: “the president of the transition expects Togo to carry out a mission of good offices between the parties involved. Togo’s Foreign Minister, Robert Dussey, has reaffirmed the availability of the president, Faure Essozimna Gnassingbe, to continue his support for the transition and help resolve this situation,” the statement said.

The Ivory Coast asked Mali last week to release the 49 Ivorian soldiers “unfairly” detained at Bamako airport and accused by the authorities of this country of being “mercenaries”.
