The Malian Armed Forces have announced this Thursday the “neutralization” of more than 20 suspected terrorists after repelling an ambush against a supply convoy in the north of the country, an attack that has resulted in three soldiers being slightly injured.
The General Staff of the Armed Forces has indicated in a statement published on its website that the military responded “with remarkable professionalism” to the ambush, before stressing that twelve motorcycles were also destroyed and weapons were seized.
“The evaluation of aerial bombardments against fleeing terrorists who have entrenched themselves in a forest in Famabougou is underway,” he said, before indicating that these “close to 50 terrorists” are responsible for “many attacks against the Armed Forces and abuses against populations in this sector”.
Mali and the rest of the Sahel countries have experienced an upsurge in violence, both jihadist at the hands of groups linked to Al Qaeda and the Islamic State, and inter-communal in nature, which has led France and the G5 Sahel countries — Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania and Niger– to increase their operations.
