Long live the new king! PlayStation 5 breaks record in Japan and distances itself from Switch

Although several companies will not go to gamescom 2022, Ubisoft confirms attendance

PlayStation 5 debuted at a very unfortunate time, as the world was crippled by the pandemic and unprecedented chip shortages and logistics issues. However, these problems seem to be behind us and with it the difficulty of getting PlayStation 5. As shown by the fantastic performance of PlayStation 5, which has just broken an important sales record and once again left Nintendo Switch behind.

When we reported that PlayStation had dethroned Nintendo Switch in Japan by displacing it in weekly sales, there were many who took this with a grain of salt, since it was only about 1 week compared to the several years Nintendo Switch spent at the top of the list. .

However, Nintendo Switch sales were on the decline; while Sony had improved supply worldwide and in terms of sales, just 1 week is enough to notice the turning point that will set the trend for consecutive months.

Changing roles: PlayStation 5 displaces Nintendo Switch in Japan

Supporting this is what happened last week in Japan, which ran from January 30 to February 5. According to figures from Famitsu (via Gematsu), in this period PlayStation once again outsold Nintendo Switch in Japan.

This week, Sony’s family of consoles managed to sell 92,126 units, something never seen before since its debut at the end of 2020, when it sold 108,082 systems. As you can see, it was very close to breaking its sales record since its premiere. However, it was around 15,000 units short of doing so. We do not doubt that this record will be broken in the following weeks. For its part, the Nintendo Switch among all its models sold 55,736 units.

With this, PlayStation 5 broke an important record, since it is the first time since its release that it has exceeded the sales of Nintendo Switch (all its models) for the second consecutive week.

In case you missed it: the amount of Nintendo Switch sold is incredible, but its sales are also going down.

It is not ruled out, however, that there are special weeks in which Nintendo Switch surpasses PlayStation 5, but they will be the least from now on. An example could be the release of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdomwhich will undoubtedly make many people buy this system, especially if a limited edition is confirmed.

However, it is striking that PlayStation 5 has achieved this feat in a very low week of sales. In fact, there was no release game in the top 30 and the best-selling PlayStation 5 game was Forspokenand Gran Turismo 7, with 4,069 and 3,709 units sold (12th and 13th place), respectively. Obviously, the top 10 spots are taken by Nintendo Switch titles.
