Lithuania declares emergency in the west due to floods

MADRID Jan. 3 () –

The Lithuanian authorities declared an emergency this Friday in the west of the country, which has been hit by heavy flooding caused by the rains of recent days.

The mayor of the Kretinga district, Antanas Kalnius, has indicated that the municipalities of Zalgiris, Kartena and Salantai have been especially affected, in addition to the city of Kretinga, according to information from the LRT network.

However, he noted that the population is out of danger despite the fact that some areas are flooded due to rising water levels, especially in the Minija River, which runs through western Lithuania.

The authorities have warned that rainfall in the last two days has exceeded half of the monthly average rainfall. The situation is expected to worsen in the coming days.
