The Government of Latvia announced this Tuesday that it will contribute 10 million euros to an initiative led by the Czech Republic aimed at purchasing and delivering ammunition to Ukraine in order to alleviate the shortage of military material on the battlefront.
The Latvian Prime Minister, Evika Silina, and the Minister of Defense, Andris Spruds, announced the measure in a joint press conference after a meeting of the cabinet of ministers, according to the LETA news agency.
Spruds has detailed that with the money contributed by Latvia it is expected that more than 3,000 155 millimeter caliber cartridges will be purchased. Both this year and the next two, the country will provide military support to Ukraine amounting to 0.25 percent of its gross domestic product (GDP).
He also recalled that Riga has recently sent around 100 drones to kyiv. “A second shipment is expected in June which will be made up of about 1,000 combat drones of various capacities,” said the Latvian Defense Minister.
The initiative promoted by the Czech Republic, agreed upon at the Ukraine Support Conference held at the beginning of February in Paris, has already received the support of other countries such as France, Belgium, Denmark, Lithuania, the Netherlands and Canada.
The Czech Republic proposes to buy missiles from third countries and then supply them to the Ukrainian Armed Forces that recently received a severe blow in Avdiivka, from where they had to withdraw due to a shortage of material.
