North Korean leader Kim Jong Un expressed satisfaction Thursday over the test-firing of two missiles carried out the day before, when South Korean authorities detected the launch of “several short-range ballistic missiles” towards the Sea of Japan, being the second action of this type carried out by Pyongyang in a week, all this after two months without carrying them out.
North Korean authorities have confirmed the launch of a tactical ballistic missile, the ‘Hwasongpo 11Da 4.5’, and a cruise missile, according to the country’s state news agency, KCNA.
The Hwasongpo 11Da 4.5, capable of carrying a nuclear warhead of up to 4.5 tons, was able to complete a medium-range flight of about 320 kilometers, while the cruise missile’s “enhanced performance” was tested.
Kim personally supervised the tests and stressed that the “continuous improvement” in the performance of his military equipment is directly related to the “serious threat posed by external forces” against him.
In this regard, it has insisted on increasing and strengthening its nuclear weapons, as it has done on numerous occasions in recent weeks.
Kim then inspected several types of firearms, including a 7.62-millimeter sniper rifle and a 5.56-millimeter automatic rifle, both developed by North Korea’s military industry.
South Korea detected multiple launches of short-range ballistic missiles in the same direction as the new test on Thursday. Just one day later, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un visited a nuclear weapons production facility, where he called for continued work to increase the country’s atomic arsenal.
These actions are compounded by Pyongyang’s continued launching of garbage balloons towards the South since late May, to which Seoul has responded by resuming psychological warfare through the launching of leaflets and propaganda broadcasts on the border.
