Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odinga accuses the US of ignoring the "fraud" of the presidential elections

1 Apr. (EUROPE PRESS) –

Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odinga has accused the US ambassador to the African country, Meg Whitman, of willfully ignoring what Odinga considered large-scale fraud during the presidential election in August last year and in the elections. that his greatest rival, William Ruto, ended up taking the victory.

“There is no European democracy, American democracy and African democracy. Democracy is measured by a universal standard,” declared the leader of the opposition coalition Azimio the Umoja One Kenya Coalition after accusing the diplomat of partisanship when testifying before a group of businessmen this Wednesday at the Nairobi Chamber of Commerce that the elections had been “free and transparent”.

“This woman seems not to know what country she is talking about. Development cannot be put before democracy here,” Odinga lamented during the funeral of deputy Grace Oyango this past Friday, in comments collected by the Kenyan newspaper ‘The Nation’.

Odinga has called demonstrations every Monday and Thursday to protest the high cost of living and against the government, which he considers illegitimate for considering the August elections fraudulent. Tension has escalated to the point that the opposition leader this week denounced an alleged assassination attempt during Thursday’s anti-government protests in the capital, Nairobi, describing it as “a very sad day in the country’s history.”

The Kenyan government said before Thursday’s demonstrations that the country is on the brink of “total chaos” and vowed to act to deal with “widespread violence” in recent days, which it blamed on “criminal mobs showing up as protesters”.
