Kallas appoints a Spanish diplomat as secretary general of the EU diplomatic service

BRUSSELS Jan. 22 () –

The Spanish diplomat Belén Martínez Carbonell will be the new Secretary General of the External Action Service of the European Union (EEAS) as appointed by the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Policy, Kaja Kallas, as confirmed this Wednesday by the EEAS itself.

With an extensive career in the EEAS and the European Commission, Martínez Carbonell will take over as ‘number two’ in European diplomacy, only behind Kallas, as of February 1. He replaces the Italian diplomat Stefano Sannino, chosen at the time by Josep Borrell.

She currently holds the position of Director General of the Global Agenda and Multilateral Relations in the EEAS and has held various positions in European diplomacy for the last 15 years, including Director of Human Resources.

In addition, the EEAS has confirmed the appointment of the Swedish diplomat Olof Skoog as Deputy Secretary General for Political Affairs, another of the most trusted positions for the head of European diplomacy. Skoog until now served as special envoy for Human Rights and, among other positions, was head of the EU delegation to the United Nations in New York.

The Nordic diplomat will take over from March 1 to the Spanish Enrique Mora, appointed by Borrell in 2020 and one of the closest people to the Spanish socialist during his mandate as High Representative, a period in which he led missions to Venezuela or negotiated with Iran the return to the nuclear agreement.
