Journalist and community leader arrested accused of trying to assassinate Maduro

The Venezuelan prosecutor's office confirmed the arrest of a journalist and community leader accused of allegedly being linked to an assassination attempt against President Nicolás Maduro

Several organizations reported that the journalist and social activist, Carlos Julio Rojas, was “kidnapped” on Monday night by hooded men dressed in black who were traveling in a van, in the center of Caracas.

The attorney general, Tarek William Saab, said that there was an arrest warrant against Rojas for, as he said, “being linked and directly identified as an instigator and logistical operator in the assassination attempt” against Maduro, on March 25, when he went to the National Electoral Council (CNE) to formalize your registration as a presidential candidate.

Saab released a photograph in which Rojas is seen handcuffed and escorted by two agents in what appears to be a facility of the Bolivarian National Intelligence Service (SEBIN).

On March 25, two people were arrested for allegedly trying to assassinate Maduro during a mass event. Both were linked to Vente Venezuela, the party of the opposition leader, María Corina Machado, but the political organization denied the links and assured that the accusations meant a government attack to justify persecution and arrests.

Rojas, who constantly, together with neighbors from his community in the center of Caracas, denounces failures in public services, was previously deprived of liberty and was released from prison in 2020, accused of, among other crimes, treason.

Six close collaborators of Machado, winner of the opposition presidential primary, but disqualified from holding public office, have been detained in recent weeks and arrest warrants have been issued against six other people in her environment who are taking refuge in the Argentine embassy in Caracas. .

Since January, the Maduro government has denounced several conspiratorial plans which he claims have been dismantled and has ordered multiple arrests.
