Serious infections with group A streptococcus are increasing in Japan. This bacteria can cause streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (STSS), which is fatal in two out of three cases. Japanese authorities have declared a red alert in more than half of the country's 47 departments.

A new viral and highly contagious disease has Japan on alert, years after Covid-19. Serious group A strep infections are transmitted between adult humans through the air or by coming into contact with infected people via skin lesions.
In these three months of 2024, Japan has already registered 474 cases, or half of the total number of infections in 2023.
In 80% of cases, this bacteria causes benign infections such as tonsillitis or scarlet fever. The first symptoms of the most severe form are fever, sore throat, exhaustion, vomiting and diarrhea.
Pandemic reflections
The Minister of Health, Keizo Takemi, asked the Japanese to resume the behavior and reflexes of the pandemic, such as the use of face masks. Streptococcus A is believed to have spread due to the relaxation of anti-Covid measures.
Tameki recalled that this bacteria is transmitted by tiny droplets, which is why it is important to wash your hands frequently and cover your mouth when coughing. Antibiotics may be insufficient against infection.
The Japanese Institute of Infectious Diseases said it had not been able to identify the cause of the spread of the most severe and sudden forms, which can cause respiratory failure, organ failure and death in less than 48 hours.
