It is striking that Warner did not have anything clear about releasing Beetlejuice Beetlejuice on the big screen. In fact, the initial idea was to make it go straight to streaming. Only Tim Burton’s stubbornness (and his promise to reduce the film’s total budget) finally got the producers to give the go-ahead for a traditional theatrical release.
The reality is that the film is being a huge success at the box office. Something that, in these times, is not at all usual. There are many ambitious projects that later fail to attract viewers. It seems that now There is only room for two things: cinematographic phenomena (trends, fashions) and flops.. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice clearly belongs to the first group.
The success of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice
It may seem that in this day and age, releasing a great film is like flipping a coin: it may come up heads, but it may come up tails. Perhaps one can understand the failure of The Ravenfor example. Many remakes that nobody asked for have not managed to succeed before either. Or Bordelandsa video game saga without the support of the general public.
But it is more difficult to understand how productions like Furiousa prequel (okay, prequel, which usually always works worse than the originals and sequels), but of a saga that had just swept everything away, like Mad Maxdon’t catch on. Not to mention the large number of superhero movies that have made little less than ridiculous. Only the “top” ones continue to attract people.
Probably not even the most optimistic (in this case, almost certainly Tim Burton) could have expected that Beetlejuice Beetlejuice got the box office results that it is finally getting. The film remains number one in the United States for the third consecutive weekand something similar happens in many of the countries where it has also been released.
As far as numbers are concerned, Tim Burton’s new film has managed to accumulate a whopping 226 million dollars in its country of origin alone. To which we must also add the more than 100 that it has achieved in the rest of the world. In this way, late sequels, especially those loaded with nostalgia, can have a place in the billboard.
A weaker premiere than expected
On the other hand, there is the other side of the coin: the case of Transformers One. Although Hasbro’s giant robots have always been a safe bet at the box office, it seems that its new animated release (it should not be forgotten that it began as a series of cartoons and toys) has not been entirely convincing. In its opening weekend, it has lost the battle with Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.
Many experts expected it to be a number one hit when it hit theaters, but at the last minute it failed to dethrone Tim Burton’s mischievous ghost. And yet the reviews have been more enthusiastic about Transformers One that with Beetlejuice BeetlejuiceBut that, of course, is usually another story…
