“Cetes become a very attractive instrument in times of crisis. First, they offer a risk-free rate and give a return of 11.15%,” explained Fernando Martínez Eissa, an academic at the Business School of the Pan-American University (UP).
As of June 15, the 28-day Cetes offered an interest of 11.15%, three months, 11.27%; at six months, 11.39%, and at one year, 11.31%. Inflation in May was 5.84%.
If inflation is subtracted from the yield of the Cetes, real interest remains around 5.5%.
In addition to looking for a good return, one that is above inflation so that your money does not lose purchasing power, it is important to take into account factors such as investment terms and what you want to invest for. It is always important to define short, medium and long-term goals, said Ludovic Prades, director of operations at Homie.mx, and Francisco Villa, Director of Corporate Solutions and Investment at Principal.
Another important aspect when investing is to diversify and not put all your eggs in one basket, as well as having knowledge of the instrument in which you are going to put your money, as well as seeking expert advice so as not to take unnecessary risks, added Villa.
Beyond Cetes
Although it is true that the Cetes will maintain an attractive interest rate as long as Banco de México does not begin to lower the reference interest rate, there are other alternatives to lend to the government, the experts interviewed agreed.
In the case of Mexico, government values range from Bonds, Bondes, F Bonds; as well as through investment funds such as BONDIA and ENERFIN. there are also the IPAB bonds -of protection for bank savings-, with terms of 28.91 and 182 days that offer a rate of 8.32 without forced terms, explained Martínez Eissa, a professor at the UP.
Rates of return on these instruments range from 8% to almost 11.5%, depending on the term. And you can access them through the Cetes Directo platform.
If you do not like risk, but you are adventurous and want to lend your money to other governments, it is important that you do so taking into account the following recommendations from specialists:
