The Deputy Prime Minister of Ireland, Micheal Martin, has confirmed that his country will recognize the Palestinian State before the end of this month of May, although he has not given an exact day, pending finalizing a consensus with other countries with a view to a “joint declaration “.
“We will recognize the State of Palestine before the end of the month,” said the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister in an interview with the Irish radio station Newstalk after, last month, Spain, Ireland, Slovakia and Malta expressed in a joint statement its willingness to recognize a Palestinian state.
“The specific date is not yet clear because we are still in talks with some countries regarding joint recognition of a Palestinian state,” Martin added, without naming names.
The minister noted in any case that the Government “will clarify the specific date in the coming days” and this Wednesday he plans to “hold additional consultations with Foreign Ministers regarding the final and specific details of this.”
“We are doing this in the context of the Arab peace initiative, to support a two-state solution and to send a signal to the Palestinian population at large that we support their right to self-determination and the idea of two states as the only way for them to Israelis and Palestinians can live side by side in peace,” he added.
