The Iraqi Air Force announced on Sunday the death of suspected members of a terrorist group in the Governorate of Diala, in eastern Iraq.
“Based on the intelligence information of the Military Intelligence Directorate and the planning and supervision of the target cell of the Joint Operations Command, the Iraqi Army Aviation carried out a successful air strike against a terrorist group in the area of Sundij within the Diala area of operations,” reads a statement to which the INA news agency has had access.
The Iraqi Army has indicated that this attack has resulted “in the death of members of the terrorist group and the destruction of their hideouts”, while adding that “the security forces and our brave hawks are on the lookout for the remains of the Islamic State terrorism.
Despite their territorial defeat in 2017, Islamic State sleeper cells remain active in Iraq and Syria. In recent months, the Iraqi government has launched several arrest operations that have resulted in the capture of dozens of suspected affiliations with the former caliphate.
