The Iranian Armed Forces have unveiled this Thursday their latest model of the ‘Jorramshahr’-type ballistic missile, with a range of up to 2,000 kilometers and with the capacity to carry a 1,500-kilogram warhead, described by the Iranian media as “one of the most advanced” that Tehran has.
The ceremony, held on the anniversary of the liberation in 1982 of the city of Khorramshahr from the occupation by Iraqi troops during the war between 1980 and 1988, was attended by the Iranian Defense Minister, Reza Ashtiani, according to reports picked up by the Mehr news agency.
The missile, developed by experts from the Aerospace Organization, part of the Ministry of Defense, has liquid fuel engines and has the engine located in the fuel tank, which has allowed the size of the missile to be reduced by more than ten meters.
Ashtiani stressed that this missile “is the result of years of efforts by Iranian scientists” and stressed that “it is equipped with radar avoidance technology and can pass through enemy air defense systems.”
“We are taking steps to equip the Armed Forces in various areas with missiles, drones, air defense systems and others, so this type of presentation will continue in the future,” stressed the Iranian Defense Minister, as stated by reported the IRNA news agency.
Tehran’s announcement comes amid tensions in negotiations to revive the 2015 nuclear deal, damaged by the unilateral US withdrawal from it in 2018, and Western criticism of the country for its “destabilizing” activities in the region. .
Iran has expanded its ballistic missile program in recent years amid concern from several Western countries, including the United States, which argue that it is in violation of international sanctions, although Tehran maintains that the entire program is for defensive purposes. and deterrence.
