March 10 (EUROPA PRESS) –
Iran and Saudi Arabia have ratified this Friday the resumption of their diplomatic relations with the announcement of an agreement to reopen their respective embassies within a maximum period of two months, according to a statement collected by the semi-official Iranian news agency Tasnim.
Tehran and Riyadh severed diplomatic relations in 2016 following an attack on Saudi missions in Iran by protesters calling for a halt to the execution of Shiite cleric Nimr al-Nimr.
The announcement has been made in the form of a tripartite declaration at the Foreign Affairs level by the Iranian, Saudi and Chinese governments, which has acted as a mediator in the rapprochement talks, also held in Baghdad (Iraq), during the past year.
“The foreign ministers will meet in the near future to put this decision into practice and make the necessary arrangements for the exchange of ambassadors,” according to the statement.
