IOM reports at least 55 migrants dead after shipwreck off Libyan coast

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has reported this Wednesday that at least 55 migrants have died after a boat with 60 people on board capsized off the coast of Garabouli, in Libya, the day before.

“The Libyan Coast Guard brought five survivors to the coast. According to reports, the ship left Garabouli (eastern Libya) with 60 people heading to Europe, including women and children,” he said in a brief statement on his official Twitter profile.

The IOM has specified that the five survivors – three Pakistanis, an Egyptian and a minor of Syrian nationality – were taken ashore by the Libyan Coast Guard, the Rai television channel has reported.

“This follows a series of horrific shipwrecks in the Mediterranean that have taken place before. This carnage at sea must end. States must fulfill their responsibility to save lives,” a spokeswoman for the group said on her official Twitter profile. the agency, Safa Msehli.

The Red Crescent reported on Tuesday that at least 34 migrants died after a boat capsized over the weekend off the northwestern Libyan town of Sabratha, en route to Europe.
