Iberdrola presented this Wednesday in Jaraíz de la Vera (Cáceres) the company Carbon2Nature (C2N), which was born a year ago with the aim of reduce carbon footprint global through nature-based actions, improving biodiversity and promoting a sustainable economy in which nature is an essential lever for creating sustainable value.
Since its launch, it has advanced in its mission to capture and fix more than 60 million tons of CO2 in natural sinks thanks to the development of a global and diversified portfolio of conservation, management and restoration projects in various ecosystems. For its financing, it uses, among other tools, carbon markets, and applies an approach that guarantees the highest standards of integrity, maximization of long-term positive impact and commitment to innovation and collaboration.
In one year, the initiative already has 15 projects in development and more than 40 projects under study in ten countries, focusing on Spain, Brazil, Mexico, Colombia and Australia. His strategy focuses on forestry reforestation projects and sustainable management, with more than eleven operational projects in Spain covering an area of more than 2,500 hectares and one under development in the Colombian Amazon with more than 5,000 hectares.
It is also positioning itself in projects in marine ecosystems known as blue carbon, developing a mangrove restoration project in Mexico and a pioneering pilot for planting Posidonia meadows in Spain. In his line of innovation, he also has a pilot project underway methane avoidance in livestock in Spain. In total, its portfolio of projects in operation represents close to 2 million trees planted or pending execution that will capture more than 800,000 tons of CO2. Added to this is a large portfolio under negotiation that would involve the planting of more than 20 million trees and the capture of more than 14 million tons of CO2.
“La Vera Carbon2Nature”: more than 700,000 trees in Jaraíz de la Vera
In the case of Estremadurawill be performed in the Cáceres region of He will see her with the project “Vera Carbon2Nature” in the Dehesa Boyal de Jaraíz de la Vera. Its about largest forestry project in Spain of public-private collaboration on a mountain of public utility, being the first to be done in the long term, with a view to 50 years.
The project will manage 1,499 hectares of pasture and will involve the planting of more than 700,000 trees in 467 hectares affected by degradation processes that will capture about 186,000 tCO2. The objective is regenerate and conserve a dehesa ecosystem of great value, thanks to an innovative forest transformation plan that contemplates, along with the planting of holm oaks and cork oaks, the introduction of a transitional species (Pinus Pinaster) and other accompanying species to enrich biodiversity ( holm oak, hawthorn, cornicabra, ash, chestnut and cabbage…). All this generating employment opportunities and maintaining the traditional uses of extensive livestock farming and other hunting, recreational or cultural uses, of great value for the local population thanks to a phased planting design.
The global director of innovation and sustainability of Iberdrola, Agustín Delgado, has highlighted this project as an example of Carbon2Nature’s way of doing things. “Recover our ecosystems and even improve them through innovation and long-term sustainable management. With great projects that also add up. In this case they will plant more than 700,000 trees in collaboration with the administration, under a unique approach of sustainability and quality, which generates benefits for the adjacent communities, allowing them to be compatible with the traditional uses of the mountain,” the manager reiterated.
The presentation of the project Carbon2Nature In La Vera it was attended by the Minister of the Presidency of the Government of Extremadura, Abel Bautista; the Minister of Forest Management, Ignacio Higuero, and the mayor of Jaraíz de la Vera, Luis Miguel Núñez, in addition to a wide representation of mayors from the northern regions of the province of Cáceres.
