September 18 () –
The Hungarian government has said that the company BAC Consulting, which is allegedly linked to the Hezbollah beeper devices that exploded in Lebanon on Tuesday, does not have any facilities to manufacture such devices on Hungarian territory and that it is merely a “commercial intermediary.”
BAC Consulting has been singled out by Taiwanese company Gold Apollo, which was initially identified as the manufacturer. According to the company, the Hungarian company has the right to use the Gold Apollo brand, but “the design and manufacture of the products is the responsibility of BAC.”
The Hungarian government has been able to confirm that the company “is a commercial intermediary, with no manufacturing or operations in Hungary,” according to one of its spokespersons, Zoltan Kovacs, on social media. Thus, they have no evidence that the devices in question “have been in Hungary.”
“For Hungary, this case does not represent any national security risk,” Kovacs said, but authorities will cooperate with international agencies and organisations if necessary to clarify what happened.
At least 12 people were killed and 2,800 others were injured, some 300 of them seriously, in Tuesday’s blasts, according to the Lebanese government. Initial investigations suggest explosives were placed inside the ‘buses’, so it remains to be seen how and when they were placed.
