Many of us talk about Kodi and its infinite potential as a multimedia application. From how to configure the program, to its compatibility with Amazon’s Fire TV. It is certainly the topic of the moment.
But not everyone knows what it is kodi or what it offers as a multimedia tool, and among those who know it there are disparate opinions about it. I’m here today to talk about how to turn your old PC into a media center, not to figure out if all this is correct or not.
To turn your old computer into your own Fire TV with Kodi you have to use LibreELEC. This is a free and open source lightweight operating system designed to turn a computer into a multimedia center.
The GNU/Linux distribution provides the sufficient foundations of an operating system to run the Kodi media center application, which enables the PC to quickly boot up and connect to Kodi.
Fire TV will no longer be necessary with this OS for old PCs
This week the developers have released FreeELEC 11which brings an update to Kodi 20 “Nexus”, it supports old computers and opens the possibility of giving a second life to that old laptop or desktop that had been collecting dust for years.
The biggest change is that the latest version of Kodiwhich was released in January, brings new features including support for AV1 video decodingrunning multiple instances of the same add-on, and support for saving games if you use Kodi to play.
LibreELEC 11 offers a tool (it’s much easier this way) that allows you to create a bootable USB flash drive or MicroSD card to install the operating system on any compatible hardware.
The latest version of that tool is only available for Windows.s, but there are also images available for download that work with Raspberry Pi devices and a select group of computers with compatible processors from chipmakers Allwinner, Rockchip, Amlogic, or NXP.
If you are currently using an older version of LibreElec, please note that it will not automatically update to version 11. LibreELEC 10 users can perform a manual update, but if you are using a version prior to this you will have to perform a clean installation from scratch. With all this you will have Kodi on your old computer.
