Home Secretary Says She "Dreams" Of Planes Deporting Asylum Seekers To Rwanda

Oct. 5 () –

The British Minister of the Interior, Suella Braverman, has assured that her “dream”, her “obsession”, is to see how a plane deports those seeking asylum in the United Kingdom to Rwanda, in relation to the controversial immigration measure with which London intends to send to the African country those who arrive irregularly in the country while they decide what to do with their applications.

“I would love to have a cover of ‘The Telegraph’ with a plane taking off to Rwanda, that’s my dream, that’s my obsession,” Braverman said Tuesday during a small Conservative Party conference in Birmingham, from which she was in favor of take more restrictive measures against irregular immigration.

Later that day, in her first major speech as interior minister, Braverman — of Indian and Kenyan origin — thanked her predecessor in office, Priti Patel, for toughening immigration laws.

In April of this year, Patel promoted a “pioneering” project with which to deport to Rwanda those migrants who crossed irregularly into British territory, while their asylum applications were being processed. However, a judicial appeal prevented the first flight scheduled for June from taking place.

The controversial measure has been widely questioned by human rights organizations, and even Brussels expressed doubts about the feasibility of outsourcing plans for access to asylum and the protection of those who seek it.
