Hollywood conquers Venice VIDEO ᐉ News from Fakti.bg – Culture

Many Hollywood stars will attend the Venice Film Festival, which opens on Wednesday, Reuters reported, citing BTA. Last year, the edition of one of the most anticipated film events was weaker due to strikes by Hollywood scriptwriters and actors.

The event will last for 11 days. The Venice Film Festival presents some of the best Hollywood films, which then traditionally manage to win numerous “Oscar” awards. In the last three years alone, the event in Italy presented films that received 77 nominations for the prestigious award from the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and won 14 statuettes respectively.

Major stars expected in Venice this year include Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Lady Gaga, Joaquin Phoenix, Angelina Jolie, Daniel Craig, Nicole Kidman, Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, Jenna Ortega, William Dafoe, Tilda Swinton and Adrien Brody.

“Everyone is really eager to return to Venice after the long strike last year. That’s why, in my opinion, we will have the most visited red carpet in history,” the festival’s creative director, Alberto Barbera, told Reuters.

The 2023 Hollywood actors strike forced many movie stars to skip the reunion and unions encouraged their members not to promote their projects to put pressure on major studios.

This year, some celebrities even paid for the event themselves to ensure they were on Lido Island, where fans flock to see their favourites arrive for the glamorous premieres.

Among the films competing for the Golden Lion are Todd Phillips’ “Joker: Madness for Two,” starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, Pablo Laraine’s “Maria,” in which Jolie plays opera diva Maria Callas, and Luca Guadagnino’s Queer with Daniel Craig, who defies the James Bond stereotype by taking on the role of an American gay man.

The festival opens with Tim Burton’s “Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice,” a sequel to the 1988 horror comedy that features some of the original cast members, including Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder, and new actors such as Jenna Ortega, Monica Bellucci and William Dafoe.

The film is being presented outside the competition programme, alongside John Watts’ “Lone Wolves,” starring Brad Pitt and George Clooney, which are traditionally screened at the Venice Film Festival.

Venice prides itself on attracting both blockbusters and arthouse films, established names and newcomers; this year more than half of the films in competition are from directors new to the festival.

“We have, of course, many excellent directors, some of the most anticipated films of the new season, but also many discoveries, new talents from all over the world. So it really is a mirror of modern cinema,” Barbera said.

A total of 21 films will be screened in the competition programme, including director Pedro Almodóvar’s first English-language film, The Room Next Door, starring Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton, about the deteriorating relationship between mother and daughter.

“I would be surprised if some films did not make an Oscar comeback,” said Barbera, who made a selection from some 4,000 candidates.
