Guterres warns that only 17 percent of the SDGs are progressing at a good pace

June 28 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Secretary General of the UN, António Guterres, has warned that at the current pace the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will not be met in the year 2030, since “only 17 percent” of the goals set are currently in place. within reach, while in a third, progress has stalled “or even regressed.”

“We do not have a minute to lose,” said Guterres, presenting a report on the evolution of the SDGs. The head of the UN believes that it is time to “accelerate” to fulfill the promises made by the international community and “eradicate poverty, protect the planet and leave no one behind.”

In total, there are 17 objectives signed in 2015 and which established specific goals to be achieved in a maximum period of 15 years. “In a world of unprecedented wealth, knowledge and technology, denying so many people the most basic needs is atrocious and inexcusable,” he said.

Guterres has called for doing more in terms of peace, green and digital transition and financing for development, but he also wanted to point out that there is some data for “hope”, among which he has pointed out the progress towards equality in education between boys and girls and the fact that “many women are breaking glass ceilings, in politics, in business and in other areas.”

Likewise, he has applauded the progress in the use of the Internet or medical milestones that include the decrease in HIV infections and the development of vaccines against malaria.
