The Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, regretted this Tuesday the “devastating loss of life” caused by the 6.8 magnitude earthquake in the autonomous region of Tibet, which so far leaves more than 120 dead.

“He wishes a speedy recovery to the injured and expresses his sincere condolences to the families of the victims. The United Nations is closely monitoring the situation and is ready to provide support if requested,” his spokesman, Stéphane Dujarric, said in a statement.

The earthquake, which occurred after 9:00 a.m. (local time, 2:00 a.m. Spanish peninsular time) and originated at a depth of ten kilometers below the surface, has caused fifty aftershocks and has also affected Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan and India. .

The situation has led the president of China, Xi Jinping, to order the implementation of “all possible efforts to carry out search and rescue efforts” for the population. Thus, he has asked to treat the injured, minimize victims, prevent secondary disasters and relocate those affected.
