UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Wednesday expressed his condolences to the Government of Ethiopia and the families of the nearly 230 people killed in a landslide that occurred late on Monday in the Ethiopian town of Geze Gofa, located in the Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples’ Region (south).

“(Guterres) is deeply saddened by the loss of more than 200 lives in southern Ethiopia (…) and extends his sincere condolences,” said the spokesman for the secretary-general, Stéphane Dujarric.

Following this, he reported that UN teams and partners are closely coordinating with local authorities to assess the humanitarian situation and estimate the damage in order to prepare a humanitarian response, which is already being distributed in the form of food, health and other important supplies to help the population.

The landslide was apparently caused by the rains that fell in the area. Ethiopia is currently in the rainy season, which starts in July and usually lasts until mid-September.
