April 17 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, has accepted the resignation of the head of the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Abdoulaye Bathily, who denounced the day before that the African country had become “the terrain of “a fierce rivalry between regional and international actors motivated by geopolitical, political and economic interests.”
“The Secretary General is very grateful for the work Bathily has done, for his leadership of UNSMIL and for his tireless efforts to restore peace and stability in Libya,” his spokesman, Stéphane Dujarric, said at a press conference.
Bathily denounced before the United Nations Security Council that “the renewed fight over Libya, its position and its immense resources between internal and external actors is making a political solution increasingly difficult to achieve.”
“The selfish determination of the current leaders to maintain the 'status quo' through delaying tactics and maneuvers at the expense of the Libyan people must cease,” he stressed, adding that Libyan actors “significantly hinder efforts to advance the political process.”
Later, in a press conference, Bathily confirmed that he had presented his resignation to Guterres and denounced that the African country had become a “battlefield” of rivalry between actors motivated by their own interests.
The country is divided into two administrations after the House of Representatives ended the mandate of the prime minister of unity, Abdul Hamid Dbeibé, due to the postponement of the presidential elections in December 2021 and appointed Fazi Bashaga to the position, recently suspended from office and replaced by the now Minister of Finance, Osama Hamad.
