Governing in difficult times: Liz Truss's challenges as UK Prime Minister

First modification:

After weeks of deliberations and several rounds of voting, Liz Truss became the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Boris Johnson’s successor and new leader of the Conservative Party won 57% of the vote from Conservative members, compared to 43% for former Treasury chief Rishi Sunak. Truss arrives at the helm of the Executive in a country that is going through difficult times and with a list of deep political, social and economic challenges.

Liz Truss, 47, is the third woman to become UK Prime Minister, after Margaret Thatcher, who ruled from 1979 to 1990, and Theresa May, who served from 2016 to 2019.

What influenced the election of the new prime minister? What challenges will Truss take on as UK Prime Minister? Will it improve the current situation in the country? The challenges that the new prime minister of the United Kingdom assumes is the topic that we analyze in this edition of El Debate together with our guests:

– Carmen SepĂșlveda, political scientist.

– Leslie Wehner Venegas, professor of political science at the University of Bath in the United Kingdom.
