Few names resonate as deeply as Gordon Moore. Co-founder of Intel and creator of the famous “Moore’s Law,” his legacy has shaped the way we live, work and connect today.
Gordon Earle Moore was born on January 3, 1929 in San Francisco, California. He grew up in Pescadero, a small coastal town, where he developed an early interest in science. After completing high school, he entered the University of California, Berkeley, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in chemistry. He later earned a doctorate in chemistry and physics from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in 1954.
The beginnings of his career
Moore began his career at Shockley Semiconductor Laboratories, a leader in semiconductor research. In 1957, together with seven other colleagues dissatisfied with the company’s management, he founded Fairchild Semiconductor. This movement marked the beginning of what would be a revolution in semiconductor technology.
The birth of Intel
In 1968, Gordon Moore and Robert Noyce founded Intel Corporation, with the goal of making more powerful and affordable semiconductors. Under his leadership, Intel developed the world’s first microprocessor in 1971, an innovation that forever transformed the computing industry.

Moore’s Law
In 1965, Gordon Moore published an article in the magazine Electronics where he predicted that the number of transistors on a microchip would double approximately every two years, reducing costs and increasing performance. This observation, known as Moore’s Law, became a guide for the technology industry for decades.
Although Moore’s Law is not a strict physical law, its prediction has been remarkably accurate. It has driven advances in fields such as computing, artificial intelligence, space exploration and consumer electronics.
Impact
Under Moore’s vision, Intel became one of the most important technology companies in the world. His leadership transformed the way electronic devices are designed and manufactured, paving the way for the development of personal computers, smartphones, and embedded systems.
In addition to his technological contributions, Moore and his wife Betty created the philanthropic Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, which supports initiatives in environmental conservation, scientific research and education.
