Update (05/05/2023 22:50): We have added information about the causes of interruption of services (water infiltration in a European data center). You can find the details at the end of the article. Update (05/05/2023 23:08): Services gradually begin to return to normal. |
No, it’s not your internet connection. Google has stopped working this Friday in several countries around the world, including Spain. The problems appear not to be exclusive to Alphabet’s browser. Other services from the Mountain View giant, such as the YouTube video platform, are also failing.
The website downdetector.es, which shows the status of the services in real time based on user input, reports on the problems that the aforementioned services are experiencing. More than 10,000 people have indicated bugs in Google and around 3,000 have done the same with YouTube.
Google, YouTube and other services are down
As usual in this type of scenario, many users have resorted to Twitter to share your experience. When exploring among the messages published in the last few minutes, we find that there are not only those who talk about the fall of the search engine and the video platform, but also other services.
Among the pages that are not working at the moment, at least in Spanish territory, are the Gmail email service and the Spotify streaming music platform. You can even see a certain slowness on Twitter when loading multimedia content.
At the moment, the origin of the problem that is affecting the operation of the aforementioned services is unknown. In the particular case of Google, the company has not made feedback about bugs that users are experiencing, so we don’t know when they might be fixed.
A look around the Google Cloud status page gives us some information about the current landscape of the company. There are failures in multiple modules, specifically in the European region, so possibly in other parts of the world they work normally.
At the time of writing this article, Cloud Filestore, Google Cloud Bigtable, Google Cloud SQL, Google Compute Engine, Google Kubernetes Engine, Persistent Disk modules are down or partially down. Google Cloud, let’s remember, is not used solely by Google services, but is the backbone of many others.
We are talking about the cloud computing service of the American company on which they work thousands of services from other companies that have cloud-based (or hybrid) ecosystems. For operational and security reasons, its operation is segmented into regions and is supported by data centers located in different parts of the planet.
Update: the source of the problem
We have investigated and have more information about the problems in Google services in the last few hours. The epicenter of the failures is located in one of its European data centers, specifically one located in Paris. As the company explains“the infiltration of water” in the place caused the failure of several clusters and, consequently, affected the operation of numerous services.
Water and electronic components, as we know, are not good friends. “Customers may not be able to access existing cloud resources in the europe-west9-a zone,” Google said. Moments later, the restoration of the services began, although since it is a gradual process we may have to wait to see them work again at 100%.
