Google has plans to phase out semi-custom chip designs with the help of Samsung for its line of Pixel smartphones., and in the same way as Apple, it intends to launch its first fully customized SoC. Unfortunately, this process has encountered various obstacles and, as we read in WCCFTech, Google has delayed the release of this custom Tensor chip by a full year.
The search engine giant originally planned to release the fully custom chip codenamed ‘Round’ sometime in 2024, although it seems that the changes have been extensive enough to warrant a name change and a new release year. Specifically, it was mentioned that the SoC’s new code name is Laguna, and according to people familiar with the matter, the launch will occur in 2025.
Even if Google gets past the custom CPU and GPU design issues, you still need to choose a foundry that will take on the responsibility of mass producing that chip in larger quantities and with a state-of-the-art process so Google can get a leg up on the competition.
You would expect Google to pick TSMC as it has laid a solid foundation that has been mass producing wafers for Apple for quite some time, so the Taiwanese semiconductor maker would be the obvious choice for Google.
